What Is an Aura?

An aura is a luminous body, sometimes called an energy field, surrounding your physical body. Every human body radiates a very low level of electricity known as an electromagnetic field, which surrounds them constantly.

Every living human has one of these energy fields around them. This is what is known as an aura. Some other living things like plants and animals can also have electromagnetic energy.

Everyone’s aura has layers. Each layer (and any issues that may be apparent from examining it) surrounds your body in a net of energy.

Ancient medicinal theories like the Hindu scriptures and the Vedas see this energy as being expressed in seven layers.

Each layer correlates to a different aspect of your physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional health. These layers can also interact with one another to influence your overall health and well-being.

Here are the seven auric layers:

  • Physical body aura: It is associated with your physical health.
  • Emotional body aura: This layer is linked to your emotions.
  • Mental lower aura: This layer represents your thoughts and reasoning.
  • Astral body aura: It is associated with your spiritual health and capacity to love.
  • Etheric body aura: This layer holds your psychic abilities.
  • Celestial body aura: This layer is connected to your intuitive abilities.
  • Causal body aura: It contains all other layers, meaning it is the blueprint of your spiritual journey.

Why Do Auras Matter?

Knowing your life colors can be a powerful self-discovery, self-reflection, and self-awareness tool. They can tell a lot about who you are as a person and what paths of life you may be drawn to pursue.

The colors of your aura can (and do) change over time, depending on how your life story unfolds and what emotions and situations you find yourself navigating.

This means that checking your aura regularly can help you find patterns in your life and the issues you face.

It can be a way to check in with yourself, identify areas for growth, and see progress as you become the person you want to become.

How to See Your Aura Color

It’s possible to detect your aura by using special equipment, but you don’t necessarily need anything special to see your aura.

The most common way people learn to see auras is by softening their eyes and slightly squinting, then looking in a mirror while standing in front of a white background. After a few moments, you might start to see colors forming in layers around you.

Another way to see auras is in your peripheral vision. If you focus too hard on trying to see an aura, you might miss it. Look away, relax your eyes, and you might start to see colors or lights appear.

The more you pay attention to auras, the easier of a time you’ll have seeing yours. This takes plenty of practice, so don’t get discouraged if you can’t see your aura right away!

How to See Aura Colors in Others

You might assume it would be easier or harder to see someone else’s auras than finding your own, but that’s not necessarily the case.

When you’re seeing your own aura, you can focus, meditate, and spend time trying to engage with your spiritual energy.

You can’t really do that with another person. You can’t force a person to meditate or engage with their spirituality. You have much less control of the situation when you’re reading someone else’s aura.

However, some people have a more pronounced aura than others. You might get lucky and find the person you’re trying to read has a more forthcoming aura than your own.

Try the same methods we described above and, above all, keep practicing!

Can My Aura Color Change Over Time?

Absolutely, your auric color can change over time! There is no set formula, though. Every person’s energy changes differently as each individual has their own experiences and emotions.

What Can I Do If My Aura Is Unbalanced?

You can do several things to repair your aura, like repeat positive affirmations to ward off negative energy, meditate, burn sage, and consult a healer.

Aura Colors and Meanings

Each layer of an aura is represented by a different color. The way these colors vary and interact illustrates how emotionally, spiritually, and physically complex you are at that point in your life.

Some layers may be brighter if you have stronger energy in a specific direction or trait. Some layers may be dull if you’re under a lot of stress, depressed, or physically sick.

A lack of any particular color isn’t generally a cause for concern. Auras change over time, and colors can come and go. Just because you aren’t seeing every color at once doesn’t mean you’ll never see it in your aura.

Seven Auras and Chakras

Each layer of your aura corresponds to a different chakra. Chakras are the various centers of energy in your body.

These layers are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. We’ll also explain the chakra color meanings for each of these seven colors.

Keep in mind that not every color that might appear in your aura is necessarily related to a chakra. So don’t be confused if you find brown in your aura and can’t link that to a specific chakra – that’s normal!

Red Aura

A red aura is associated with the following traits:

  • Grounded
  • Energetic
  • Strong-willed
  • Forceful

  • Overwhelmed by change
  • Prone to anxiety

A red aura is associated with your root chakra or the physical layer of your aura. This can be sensed or visible between your tailbone and pelvic bone.

This layer may be diminished when we’re awake and replenished when we rest or sleep. It’s connected to physical comfort, physical health, and the five tangible senses.

A green aura is tied to the astral layer of the aura and the heart chakra, which can be found in or around your chest. This is an emotional chakra, emitting your sensitive nature. This is also where we provide self-love.

Blue Aura

Blue aura meaning

A blue aura is associated with the following traits:

  • Intuitive
  • Spiritual
  • Freethinker
  • Intuitive
  • Understanding
  • Prone to issues with the throat and thyroid

A blue aura is tied to the spiritual layer of the aura and the throat chakra, located at the base of the throat.

This helps us connect with other people over spiritual matters. It also helps us grow and shine brighter as we teach, share, and engage with others on a spiritual level.

Indigo Aura

Indigo aura meaning

An indigo aura is associated with the following traits:

  • Curious
  • Spiritually connected
  • Gentle
  • Imaginative

  • Deep inner feelings
  • Sometimes lacks self-esteem

A purple aura is tied to the absolute layer or the aura, or your crown chakra at the top of your head. This is the final aural layer. People with purple auras have a regal energy that exudes power everywhere they go.

Natural spiritual and psychic leaders, they may grow impatient with people who aren’t as naturally attuned to the other worlds as they are.

More Aura Color Meanings

In addition to the seven chakras, a few more aura colors can represent you.

Magenta Aura

Magenta aura meaning

A magenta aura is associated with the following traits:

  • Independence
  • Non-conformity
  • Big-heartedness
  • Artistic
  • Funny
  • Fun-loving

Vivacious, bubbly, and creative, people with magenta auras love to make a splash wherever they go. However, they may at times struggle to rein in that independent energy and play well with others.

Pink Aura

Pink aura meaning

A pink aura is associated with the following traits:

  • Romance
  • Love
  • Generosity
  • Giving
  • Receiving
  • Faithfulness

A pink aura is a sign of a big heart. But you may notice there aren’t many assertive traits on that list. Pink auras may struggle to stand up for themselves and may bend too quickly to the wills of others.

Black Aura

Black aura meaning

A black aura is associated with the following traits:

  • Accumulation of fear
  • Emotional debris
  • Unresolved grief

People with black auras are perhaps the deepest emotionally and spiritually than any other type of person. They may have unresolved issues in this life or a past life.

A black aura can also indicate potential health problems or clearing and healing (physical, spiritual, or mental) that has yet to be done.

If you see black in your or someone else’s aura, take it in stride and consider it in the context of the other colors in their aura. That way, you’ll be able to find insight into what issues might need resolution or what problems might need attention.

Silver Aura

Silver aura meaning

A silver aura is associated with the following traits:

  • Easily communicate with spirits
  • Blessed
  • Intuitive

While these may sound all like excellent traits (and they are), a silver aura should be kept in check.

Those with a strong silver aura risk being too plugged into the spiritual realm and losing track of the physical realm and the present. The key to a healthy silver aura is staying grounded.

White Aura

White aura meaning

A white aura is associated with the following traits:

  • Purity
  • Oneness with the higher self
  • Self-mastery
  • Spiritually motivated
  • Cosmic wisdom

A white aura is related to the soul chakra. A chakra outside the body that stimulates spiritual growth, divine love, enlightenment, and ascension.

A white auric layer keeps each individual layer of your aura confined, balanced, and in harmony. It makes sure no one part of your aura gets out of check.

Brown Aura

Brown aura meaning

A brown aura is associated with the following traits:

  • Envious
  • People pleasing
  • Burnout
  • Jealousy

Those with brown auras may subconsciously weaken or dim their own energy in an attempt to be likable and appealing to other people.

They might be used to giving more than they get in their relationships – professionally, personally, or romantically.

Tan Aura

Tan aura meaning

A tan aura is associated with the following traits:

  • A linear thought process
  • Analytical

Gold Aura

  • Receiving divine guidance or spiritual inspiration
  • Spiritual frustration or blockage
  • Divine protection

A gold aura can mean that you’ve reached, or are close to reaching, enlightenment. Or, on the flip side, it can indicate spiritual frustration and blockage that needs to be addressed before a worthwhile reward on the other side of a struggle.

For better or for worse, those with gold auras move to the beat of their own drum. They may feel frustrated and overwhelmed by this, or they may welcome it.

Turquoise Aura

Turquoise aura meaning

A turquoise aura is associated with the following traits:

  • Teacher
  • Speaker
  • Healer
  • Confidence in knowledge
  • Readiness to be seen as a leader

Those with a turquoise aura are born leaders. They’ve put in their dues, learned what they needed to, and are ready to take on a role as a leader, teacher, and spiritual tentpole in their community – whatever that may look like for them.

Rainbow Aura

Rainbow aura meaning

When your aura shows all the beautiful colors of the rainbow, you may feel like your life is more chaotic than it is beautiful.

This usually indicates that you have a lot of things (usually good things) happening all at once. While this may feel like a slew of blessings and good fortune, it might also be a lot to handle all at once.

Those with rainbow auras may feel pulled in many different directions. People with fewer colors in their aura tend to feel pulled in fewer directions but more strongly and with more focused energy.

A rainbow aura is a bit of a double-edged sword. It’s a great opportunity for growth and for taking your life to the next level.  Still, it doesn’t always feel great in the moment. Hang in there and prepare yourself to welcome all the goodness that’s coming for you!
