History of Pink

Pink has not always been a baby girl’s color. The way people perceive pink changed drastically over the years.

Back in the 18th century, pink was used by both men and women of western European aristocrats. Beyond that, when pink and blue were associated as gender signifiers, pink was often associated with boys for its resemblance with red, an aggressive hue.

The recent associations of this color as we know it today started around the mid-1800s when men in western societies wore dark hues more often, leaving brighter and pastel tones to women.

By the turn of the century, pink had entered the mainstream — and its status shifted in the process. The advent of industrialization and mass production led to the growing cheap dyes like magenta, which resulted in bright, garish versions of the color.

Pink went from luxury to working class and, as a color often worn by prostitutes at the time, from sophisticated to vulgar.

On top of that, pink was the color used by the German Army during WWII to identify gays, which is one of the reasons fashionistas believe it became a “girl’s color.”

Today, the meaning of pink continues to shift and is often a symbol of resistance, hope, and positivity. For instance, think of the Breast Cancer campaign or the Pride Flags. There is no doubt pink is a powerful color.
