Shades of Gray Color

Gray is a neutral and achromatic color, meaning a color without hue.

In color theory, a shade is a pure color mixed with black. Technically speaking, a shade of gray would be an achromatic gray only, where the values of red, green, and blue are equal.

Still, this article presents all shades of gray that differ only slightly from the true color, varying in hue and chroma, so chromatic shades of gray, many of which are often called blue-gray, gray-green, and so on.

This article about 99 shades of gray color includes their names, hex, RGB, and CMYK codes.

Whether you’re decorating with gray shades, creating a product, or designing a site/logo, these codes will help you easily choose the right color without hassle. Enjoy!

History of Gray

The history of gray is an excellent example of how the meaning of the colors changes with our experiences and societies.

In Ancient history and the Middle Ages, gray was the color of undyed wool, making it the most common color worn by peasants and the poor.

During the Renaissance and the Baroque, gray started to play a more significant in fashion and art because it was a harmonious combination with black, which was the most popular color of the nobility in southern Europe.

However, gray became highly fashionable in the 18th century and the ones that followed.

In the late 1930s, gray became a symbol of industrialization and war, as portrayed in Picasso’s Guernica (a painting about the horrors of the Spanish Civil War). After the war, the gray business suit became a metaphor for uniformity of thought.

With the modernization and expansion of many cities around the world, gray became a color associated with modernity and technology.
